Common questions
How do I play?
Pick a mode, pick a category, and tap Start round. One person holds the phone; everyone else plays along.
In I describe, you see the word and talk around it without saying it. In I guess, you hold the phone facing out and never see the word, while the group describes it to you. In I act, you act it out without talking.
In guess mode, how do I score?
You cannot see the buttons, so there are none to aim at. Tap anywhere on the screen for a point. Tap the dark bar along the bottom to pass. Each tap flashes a full-screen “Got it” or “Pass”, so the room knows what happened.
Does it need internet?
No. Every word ships inside the app. Blurt works in airplane mode, in a canyon, and at a campsite with no bars.
What is the Everything category?
Every word for that mode, in one pile. It is the default, so a round starts without anyone having to choose a theme.
Do the same words come up every time?
No. Each round is dealt shuffled, including a second round of the same category.
Can a child who cannot read play?
Yes. Turn on the Kids switch. The decks change to 628 simple words across 13 categories, and every one shows a picture. The picture is always the thing itself, so a child plays by looking.
What is the “Kid word” button during a round?
It pulls one easy word, with its picture, for whoever just got the phone. The next word goes back to the grown-up deck. It works in every mode, so nobody has to sit out a round.
Can I change category in the middle of a round?
Yes. Tap the category name at the top left. Your score and the timer carry over.
Is there a timer?
Only if you want one. It is off by default; turn it on from the setup screen and pick 30, 60 or 90 seconds. With it off, the round ends when you say so.
Why does the word get bigger when I turn the phone?
Landscape gives the word the full width, so it reads across a fire or with the phone propped on a log. Both orientations work in every mode.
Can I swipe instead of tapping the buttons?
Yes. Drag the word card right to score it, left to skip it.
A word is wrong, boring, or unfair. Can you change it?
Please tell me. Email the address above with the word and the category. The same goes for a kid picture that does not obviously mean its word.
Is there an iPad or Mac version?
Not yet. Blurt is an iPhone app today.
